Part of the Christian Education curriculum for the third graders includes a camp retreat. Thanks to a group from Chicago, we were able to send the entire third grade class and chaperones without cost to them. Pastors Andres and Felicia shared several themes with the children but the overall camp theme was how to be a friend and to like yourself. In the evening at the vespers service the children were encouraged to let Jesus take their fears. The children shared many fears from their parents fighting or being abusive, for spiders, snakes, etc, to even having fears of spirits within and outside their home. The more I hear and learn about this, the more I understand how much Satan and the spirit world has impacted this nations.
Besides the services and discussion times, the children had los of time to swim, play sports and participate in a group competition that focused on team building. In this competition it wasn't always the fastest or strongest team that won; it was the team who could work best together. For third graders this is a very challenging concept since most still want to be first and want to be the stars.
In the evening the children were asked to write notes to anyone they wanted to and drop them in the box. The majority thanked God, the pastors, the school leaders, their teachers, and their sponsors for being able to attend the camp and Nuevo Horizonte School.
